Is there a difference between them? Are they cammed diferently for different torque or something? Can you tell from looking at them on a bench if they came from a bus or a bug?

dunno for sure but afaik the only 1600tp engine code used in type 2s is 'AE' which is identical to the beetle 'AE' except for the crossmember mounting at the bottom of the case... the valve train is the same I believe

It was Barry the trike dude that asked me - he'd been told it was a VW engine, that was all - he'd only had it a couple of weeks and was keen to find a club, we may see him at the next meet smile

I've only ever had buses and really wasn't sure - I'd forgotton about the crossmember hole.
